The Center for Jewish Studies at Harvard University is pleased to announce an interdisciplinary conference on Pluralism, Multilingualism, and Jewish Identities. The conference is intended for graduate students from universities in the Northeast (CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, RI, VT, and Eastern Canada).
The conference will be held on March 20-21, 2017 at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.
We invite papers that explore the interplay of cultural and linguistic diversity in Jewish experiences, spanning antiquity to modernity.

Questions for consideration include, but are not limited to: What roles has language played in intra-Jewish relations across denominational, geographic, and ethnic lines? How have pluralism, universalism, and particularism been imagined as Jewish values in different historical contexts? In what ways have biblical and rabbinic texts shaped Jewish approaches to language? Is Hebrew (whether ancient or modern) unifying or divisive? How do Jews form community in pluralistic societies? How do they delineate personal authority within existing power structures? What is the relationship between pluralism and secularism?
Beyond these suggestions, all papers that engage the conference theme are welcomed.
