The University of Helsinki doctoral programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change invites applications for 2-5 doctoral candidate positions, each position lasting for a 4-year period, starting from 1.1.2017.

Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change

The Doctoral Programme in Political, Societal and Regional Change is multidisciplinary by nature. It offers lectures, courses, seminars and conferences on a variety of topics.

The Doctoral Programme’s responsible faculty is the Faculty of Social Sciences and its home unit at the responsible faculty is the Department of Political and Economic Studies. The Doctoral Programme includes disciplines and departments from three faculties of the University of Helsinki: the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry.

The participating disciplines are as follows:

The Faculty of Social Sciences, the Department of Political and Economic Studies

  • Development Studies
  • Economic and Social History
  • Political History
  • Political Science (3 specialisation options: Administration and organisations; Politics; World politics).

The Faculty of Arts, the Department of World Cultures

  • Area and Cultural Studies (6 specialisation options: European Studies; Latin American Studies; Nordic Studies; North American Studies; Russian and East European Studies; East Central European, Balkan and Baltic Studies.).

Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, the Department of Economics and Management

  • Consumer Economics

The program includes a multidisciplinary faculty and departmental cross-national research units:

  • The Aleksanteri Institute, Centre for Russian and Eastern European Studies
  • Centre for Nordic Studies (CENS)
  • Network for European Studies (NES)

The duties of a doctoral candidate are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete his or her postgraduate studies. The duties can include also teaching and other tasks. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.

The appointee must obtain the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment. The appointee must hold a second-cycle degree (e.g. master’s degree or equivalent) and have a research proposal approved by the doctoral programme. Other requirements include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated through previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal.

Fluency in English language is required.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary is EUR 2065-3022 per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.
