in the doctoral programme in Theology for a 1–4 year period starting from January 1st, 2017.
The doctoral programme in Theology includes all the disciplines of the Faculty (Biblical Studies, Church History, Systematic Theology, Study of Religions, and Practical Theology), and it belongs to the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki. The doctoral programme in Theology provides high quality doctoral education which prepares for careers in research and expert services in the field of Theology and ideologies. It co-operates with the leading research institutions in its field both on a national and international level. The duties of a doctoral student are to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and to complete his or her postgraduate studies. The duties also include teaching and other tasks. Teaching tasks can account for up to 5 % of the annual working time.
A doctoral student applicant must hold a second-cycle degree and have an approved research proposal. Other requirements include the ability and motivation, as demonstrated through previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree according to the study plan and research proposal. To successfully perform the duties of the position, the appointee should have good skills in English.
When selecting the doctoral students, the steering committee of the doctoral programme will take into consideration the quality of the research proposal, the topic of research and its impact, previous academic performance of the applicants during their earlier studies and time in which the studies were completed, and feasibility of the study plan.
The appointee must have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment. If the applicant has not yet been granted the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, he or she should apply for study right and submit required documents for that.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. The salary is based on levels 2–4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee shall be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The salary is EUR 24 600–36 000 per year, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and work experience. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.
