College of Social Science and International Studies
The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow to support the work of Professor Susan Banducci, Dr Travis Coan, Dr Lorien Jasny and Dr Hywel Williams (CEMPS). This fixed term (1fte, 6 months) ESRC funded post is available 1 February 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until 30 July, 2018. The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting the completion of research papers and deliverables for a project on using new forms of data for social research (Measuring Information Exposure in Dynamic and Dependent Networks). The tasks will include developing code for analysing social media data, prepare the data and perform reliability checks in advance of analysis, conduct analysis, and preparing manuscripts for journal submission.
The post holder will join the team of researchers and work with the teams to meet the objectives of the research project. The successful applicant will be able to summarise relevant social science literature on political communication, elections and public opinion, apply advanced quantitative skills to unstructured data, and have experience working with large unstructured data. In addition, the successful applicant will have experience, or demonstrate the ability to, presenting information on research progress and outcomes, communicating complex information, orally, in writing and electronically and preparing articles for submission to journals.
Applicants will possess a relevant PhD (or be nearing completion). In addition, proficiency in R and/or Python, familiarity with text-based classification methods (e.g., supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and dictionary-based classification methods) would be beneficial.
